Tips Around the House:

• Air Filters - Change return air filters monthly. Clean filters go a long way to save energy and protect your unit. Homeowners with Space Guard filters should refer to the user manuals for maintenance information.
• Cabinet Cleaning - With a damp cloth (without soap), lightly clean the interior and exterior finish. Immediately dry with a clean dry cloth. This procedure can be done monthly without disturbing the finish. To preserve the exterior finish, we recommend Cabinet Magic. Laminated interiors should not be oiled.
• Maintain ease in opening & closing drawers -Spray ball bearing rollers on drawers and on cabinets with silicone lubricant spray.
• WARNING: Avoid using lacquer thinner, acetone, or other solvents on finished wood parts. Avoid overloading cabinet shelves and drawers with excessive weight.
• Garbage Disposal - Pour one cup of baking soda down the disposal with a tray of ice cubes. Turn on the cold water and run the disposal for approximately one minute (this will freshen the drain and will insure there is no food left in the unit). Pour approximately 1 and ½ oz of cooking oil in the disposal and turn the power on and off (this will lubricate the bearings and seals).
• Ice Maker - Make sure it is clean. Replace the filter as specified by manufacturer and on start up throw away first bucket of ice.
• Oven - Make sure it is clean. Wipe the door gasket with salad oil to keep it from drying out.
• Dishwasher - Wipe the door seal down with salad oil. Pour four cups of water and one cup of white vinegar in the tub and leave the door closed (this will keep all the seals moist and eliminate odors). The vinegar will rise to the top and keep the water from evaporating.
• Drains - Pour one cup of chlorine bleach down the drain. Let it sit overnight, and then flush with water (this will safely dissolve hair, soap, and grease accumulations which may solidify during a period of non-usage).
• Refrigerator - Make sure it is clean. Put ½ cup of baking soda in the fridge and freezer to absorb any moisture and to eliminate odors. Wipe the door gaskets with salad oil to keep them from drying and cracking.

Air Conditioning Tips:
• 1: Whole-house fans help cool your home by pulling cool air through the house and exhausting warm air through the attic. They are MOST effective when operated at night and when the outside air is cooler than the inside.
• 2: Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible in the summer. The less difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be.
• 3: DON'T set your thermostat at a colder setting than normal when you turn on your air conditioner. It will not cool your home any faster and could result in excessive cooling and, therefore, unnecessary expense.
• 4: Set the fan speed on high except in very humid weather. When it's humid, set the fan speed low. You'll receive better cooling! Slower air movement through the cooling equipment allows it to remove more moisture from the air, resulting in greater comfort. Consider using an interior fan in conjunction with your air conditioner to spread the cooled air more effectively through your home without greatly increasing your power use.
• 5: DON'T place lamps or TV sets near your A/C thermostat. The thermostat sense heat from these appliances which can cause the air conditioner to run longer than necessary.
• 6: Plant trees or shrubs to shade air-conditioning units but do not block the airflow. A unit operating in the shade uses as much as 10% less electricity than the same one operating in the sun.

COMPARISON OF MEDICARE SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE By Sandra Merritt, a resident MEDICARE SUPPLEMENTS: Designed to cover the "gaps" in Medicare Part A (such as annual hospital deductible $1132) as well as Part B (physician and diagnostic services which Medicare covers at only 80 %). Part D (Prescription drugs insurance) must be purchased separately. Typically pricing for the top plan-the "F" Plan runs around $130 per month for the younger ages and into the high $200's for older ages. Part D can run as little as $14.80 per month - for high deductible plans to as much as $60-80 for more comprehensive drug coverage. The "Upside" for purchasing a Medicare Supplement is that one may use and hospital, physician or diagnostic service that accepts Medicare-anywhere in Nevada or throughout the country. There is no "network" or "provider list" to contend with. The downside is the price. MEDICARE ADVANTAGE- available in both HMO and PPO: Both HMO and PPO Advantage Plans are all inclusive and cover Part A, B & D. In most cases there is no monthly premium for either HMO or PPO. PPO Advantage plan has a larger access to Nevada "network" private doctors, many may be physicians you may already be using but there are higher copays then HMO’s and not all doctors participate in these plans. No Referrals are required-which most people prefer. HMO Advantage plans are the most cost effective and have the smallest copays-but the physician list is strictly limited to ONLY HMO network providers. Primary Care Physician referrals are required for specialist visits. WHEN CAN I ENROLL? If you are aging in, on disability, coming off a group or new to Nevada you can enroll any time of year. Otherwise annual enrollment for January effective date 2012 will be October 15, 2011 through December 7, 2011.
